My Story
My mom used to say that I was on a different planet. She was right! Growing up in a big family, it can be easy sometimes to feel a bit lost. But there’s one characteristic that makes me stand out in my family; I’m the only left-handed person! As a result, I always had a special spot at the dinner table and I never had to share my softball mitt. Having this unique quality was a gift because it helped me realize that no matter how big the crowd, there is something in each of us that makes us unique. And celebrating our special gifts and talents is what brings us joy and success in life.

My first experience in creating beautiful interiors was at the age of 11 when I got my own room. My mother had always decorated our home with cheerful colors, contemporary themes, and clever artwork. And she gave me everything I needed to design my perfectly pink room full of roses and delicate knick knacks. I learned the basic design principles that she used, and began my own journey into the decoration and re-decoration of the many spaces I’ve occupied since my first “grown-up” room.

I attended several colleges and tried all kinds of jobs, looking for my path. But it was during my time working at a high-end furniture boutique, that I discovered my future. I met a decorative painter there who let me apprentice with her. I’d learned a great deal in Art school and experienced many things at work, but those years were only preparation for my real education. I fell in love with the magic of color and soaked up every detail and nuance involved in decorative painting. I became an artist and shortly after that a business woman and Designer. Today I have the amazing fortune of hosting and designing for a show called Fresh Coat, a makeover show using just paint. It’s currently airing nationally on the DIY (Do-It-Yourself) channel. I’m the spokesperson for Shur-Line, a company that manufactures painting tools, and I’m taking part in the Michelangelo Council with Armstrong Ceilings to educate homeowners about the best ways to improve their homes.

I love my work. I love the people I work with. And I love my family for suffering through, AND celebrating, my unique qualities.

Sound Bites
Favorite People: My mom for her tenacity
My sister, Shelley, for her faith
Al Gore for his Inconvenient Truth
Oprah Winfrey for living big and taking risks

Things I’m not so good at: Keeping secrets and Waiting for the next project.

My advice to others: Don’t stop laughing. In the darkest times it will bring you relief and perspective. Doors are opening and closing all the time, always for our benefit. It’s okay to be different. I do it all the time!
